Austin’s art scene is in full flow, with many significant artistic events to choose from. This month’s feature is an exciting group show at Martha’s Contemporary until April 20, 2024.

If you have an interest in contemporary art and have yet to venture to Martha’s, I encourage you to do so. Owners Ricky Morales and Meredith Williams are a dynamic couple with a passion for showcasing diverse emerging artists from Austin and beyond.

In this iteration, they have teamed up with an equally young and impressive gallery from Dallas, 12:26, to bring together a group show of eight artists. The exhibit draws from a quote by Paul Simon, “Some people say the sky is just the sky, but I say, why deny the obvious?” Both galleries invited the artists to create pieces with sci-fi, dreamscape, and paranormal themes.

Visitors will encounter a dynamic presentation of paintings and sculptures. In Wes Thompson’s work, which seems to hover in thin air, a dog’s head morphs out of the end of a piece of wood. Julia Mauri’s portraits have a multifaceted, dreamlike quality that wouldn’t be out of place in David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive. Emily Furr’s surrealist missile paintings punctuate the space with a foreboding presence. However, a standout favorite of mine is Conor O’Leary’s Magritte-style paintings, which left me with more questions than I had when I came in.
